How It Works
Envisioning a garden transformation can feel both exciting and overwhelming, no matter if you're a first time gardener or an experienced landscape designer. A whirlwind of worries might arise: What if the plants don’t survive? Will it be too time consuming or expensive? What should I plant? How do I care for them? How often should they be watered? Is the soil suitable? Am I physically prepared? What about spiders! The concerns can seem endless.
Our Planting Packages are thoughtfully crafted to address these and many other common challenges as effectively as possible. They feature the same hardy plants trusted by leading garden designers, capable of thriving in a variety of soil types, moisture levels, and lighting conditions. These plants are readily available, require minimal care beyond watering until established, and will grow together into an exceptionally beautiful and resilient garden.
For a breakdown of some general garden design principles, refer to our Design Guidance.
The steps for implementing a Planting Package are outlined here. For further assistance, feel free to Contact Us. Whether you have questions about specific plants, garden styles, planting areas, or maintenance, we're here to provide expert advice. The FAQs also offer helpful insights and answers to frequently asked questions.
1
Choose your garden style
Plant selection is essential to creating a cohesive garden style, as it relies on the interplay of plants rather than individual specimens. To make this process easier, Closed Canopy offers curated planting packages in various garden styles, all tailored to suit the Australian climate.
The choice of garden style should harmonize with the character of the architecture, existing plantings, and surrounding landscape while also reflecting the personalities of its users. For example, Victorian architecture pairs well with a traditional planting style, while a small weatherboard house is better suited to a cottage style garden.
However, it is not necessary to adhere to a single style. All planting packages are compatible and may be combined freely. This approach allows for greater variation and diversity throughout the garden.
2
Define your planting area
Our planting packages contain enough plants to cover an area of up to 10 square meters. This area is calculated by adding the mature sizes of all plants and considers the space between them, excluding trees. Trees are excluding as the area beneath them counts as planting space.
Since most gardens do not require exactly 10 square meters of planting, the packages have been designed to be modular and flexible. For larger areas, multiple packages can be combined to extend coverage. For example, three packages will cover up to 30 square meters. There is no limit to the number and variety of packages that can be used in combination, making the system scalable to suit gardens of any size.
The packages can also be used in smaller areas. In such cases, the planting density can be increased, or selections can be made to include only the most appropriate plants for the space. When used in this way, additional plants may remain.
3
Receive your Planting Package
Plants are sourced from a trusted network of reputable growers and suppliers, ensuring the highest quality stock. Each planting package is thoughtfully curated to streamline the process and provide a single, well organised batch for pickup or delivery.
It is critical to keep plants well watered in their pots prior to planting.
Clear communication and confirmation of pickup or delivery timing is essential. Refer to our Terms and Conditions.
4
Position your plants
Positioning plants to receive direct sunlight will generally yield better results. Consider optimal sunlight exposure when deciding where to place each plant.
There’s no wrong way to plant a garden, and creativity is most welcome. However, grouping the same plants together in blocks and arranging by height, with taller growing plants at the back and shorter ones at the front, can help create visually pleasing results.
5
Plant with confidence
To plant successfully, start by clearing the area of any unwanted growth, dig a hole, position the plant so the soil level in the pot matches the surrounding ground, backfill the hole with loose, friable soil, water thoroughly, and apply a layer of mulch. With these steps, the plants in our planting packages are likely to take root.
If a plant’s roots have filled the pot it arrived in, loosen them before planting. This encourages the roots to spread more easily into the surrounding soil, giving the plant the best possible start.
6
Nurture your garden
Proper watering is crucial, especially during a plant’s establishment phase. During the first two years, it’s important not to let plants dry out for extended periods of time. In cooler months, watering may only be necessary once a fortnight, but in warmer weather, the frequency should increase to several times a week. After this establishment period, supplemental watering is generally unnecessary but beneficial.
Widespread pest and disease problems are unlikely, as our planting packages are carefully designed to minimize their occurrence and promote a resilient, healthy garden environment.
Some plant loss is inevitable and should not be cause for significant concern. Unless a key plant, such as a large shrub or tree, is affected, these losses are unlikely to have a long term impact on the garden’s overall success.
